CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

'Well, Jack's in a hoor of a mood,' Miller said, as he and Purcell climbed into the taxi outside the Radisson Blu.

'What's up?'

The taxi did a U-turn, dodging tourists who were either crossing the street or standing in the middle of the road taking photos. Then he floored it, going downhill, and passing John Knox's house on the left.

'It's a strange situation. You know Samantha, his girlfriend?'

'Yes.'

'Well, they split up after she accused him of being the man who attacked her.'

'What? Are you kidding me? Why would she do that?'

The taxi bumped its way up to Abbeyhill, heading for Easter Road.

'She said her ex told her Jack had given him a slap down in the toilets at Logie Bairds.'

'Ha! That sounds like the Jack I knew!'

'She said the ex showed her a selfie he had taken on the night.'

'So Jack just hit him for no reason? I don't believe that for a minute.'

'No, Jack says the guy assaulted him first, and this was only self-defence.'

'So what's she worried about?'

Miller looked at him. 'She said, if he could make a mess of her ex like that, he was just showing her that he was a violent man.'

'He's an ex-murder squad detective. What did she expect? He's not going to let some little fanny give him a slap. He's also a big bastard. I wouldn't like to get into a tussle with him.'

'I just don't see how she connected the dots. Her ex wanted to give my old man a slap and he defended himself, and now she thinks Jack is the one who attacked her.'

'That's a big leap.'

'It certainly is.' The taxi crossed London Road.

'So how are things going with Suzy?'

'We're taking it slowly. She's great though, Frank. She makes me laugh, she's sexy and she wants to protect her man. Unlike that boiler I was married to.'

'Paula was good for you at one point.'

Purcell looked at him. 'I thought so, too, until I met Suzy. She's a woman who's loyal. Something Paula could never rise to.'

The taxi skirted Leith Links and then they were going down Bath Road.

'Where you guys wanting dropped off?' the taxi driver said, looking at them in his rear view mirror.

'Here's fine, pal,' Purcell said, showing the drive his warrant card. 'You don't have to worry, we're not going to do a runner.'

The driver visibly relaxed as Purcell took care of the fare, asking for a receipt. They stood and listened to it chug away, the noise of its engine unmistakeable in the quiet of the docks.

A wind was whipping in off the Firth of Forth, and Miller was glad he'd put a jacket on.

'What now, Percy?'

'I know it was over ten years ago, but I can remember it like it was yesterday. I saw Matt Spencer walking into the docks and he turned right. I followed him. Constitution Street was like it is now; not connected to the street we're standing in. I followed him along here and he went into that old warehouse.'

Purcell pointed to the building on their right.
